Did you know that noise-induced hearing loss is a thing? And that it doesn’t only happen as a result of attending heavy metal concerts or firework shows over and over again?

Studies have shown that noise-induced hearing loss can also be the result of too-loud headphones. Can you believe that? It’s true! And with our technological age, ourselves and particularly our children, are more exposed to headphones and noise devices than ever before.

According to the National Institutes for Health, 25% of adults have a degree of hearing loss and one in eight people over the age of 12 have hearing loss.

The statistics are truly scary. But the good thing is that noise-induced hearing loss is completely preventable.

When you travel a lot like we do, your kids often get time with iPads and other tablets in the car, on the plane or anywhere in between.

When my oldest was little, I used to just turn the noise off on the iPad on a plane so that it wouldn’t bother other passengers. But when he got old enough to realize I had done that and he wasn’t satisfied just watching the video, I knew I needed to get them headphones.

But I worried so much about their little ears and I was constantly checking the volume and trying to figure out if it was too loud. They loved to turn the volume up themselves and it was such a fight to keep it at safe levels.

Then, at the end of last year, I heard about Puro Sound Labs. I read their story about personal experience with juvenile hearing loss, and knew that this family-owned business was invested in protecting little ears.

Puro Sound Labs sent us a set of their BT2200 kids limited headphones to try out for ourselves. We have been using them for two months and we couldn’t be happier.

I purposefully waited to write this review until we had a few trips under our belt and could see how the headphones held up for our family.

As a mom, I love the volume-limiting and ambient noise isolation aspects of the headphones. The BT2200 limits volume at 85 decibels (wether your child is listening via bluetooth or wired to the device), the standard for preventing hearing loss.

These headphones also use technology that creates a crisper sound at lower volumes through controlling the frequency curve and blocking out 80% of ambient noise.

Neither of my children has ever complained about being able to hear their device while using their Puro Sound Labs headphones.

Speaking of the kids, they absolutely love their headphones. They are aged 2 and 4 at the time of writing and both find the headphones very comfortable.

Another huge benefit is the bluetooth capability. We have been able to connect their headphones to their devices wirelessly, which is a game changer for two wiggly boys who previously would accidentally unplug their headphones every few minutes while adjusting their seat or playing around. This also eliminates worry that they will get the cord tangled around their neck while they wiggle.

Another pro we found was the long battery life. According to the company, this model as an 18-hour battery life. We recently took the headphones with us on a cruise and they were used on the airplane on the way to Florida and for an hour or two each day while on the cruise and we never had to charge the battery (which you can do via USB). We were worried that we would have way too many devices to charge every night, but we never once had to plug in the headphones!

We love the fun colors offered, as well! My boys picked blue and gray, but other options include purple and pink!

The headphones have held up really well. Each pair comes with a carrying case that made me feel very secure about just throwing them in our carryon or our backpack and not worrying about them being scratched, bent or broken. And we don’t have to worry about losing the charger or the wire for wired use.

In my honest opinion, I really can’t think of anything negative to say about these headphones. They are an investment, priced higher than drug store headphones, but protecting my little boys’ hearing and preventing lifelong hearing loss is worth the cost.

If you are looking for something with noice cancellation, Puro Sound Labs also makes the PuroQuiet model, with active noise cancellation up to 22 decibels.

And if you have a child with sensory considerations or if you do want to take your children to monster struck rallies or fireworks shows, make sure and check out the PuroCalm ear muffs, that are made to reduce 27 decibels.

If you would like to learn more about noise-inducing hearing loss in children, the It’s A Noisy Planet campaign from the National Institutes of Health has a lot of great information. They also have great tips and resources for parents who are interested in taking action to protect their children’s ears.

There are so many ways to protect our children’s ears from buying quiet toys, closing windows and doors when when noisy machines or appliances are in use, eliminating multiple sources of noise such as music in one room and TV in another, and of course making sure that we have quality headphones for our little ones.

Don’t forget to share this article with all of your parent friends so that we can protect the next generation from noise-induced hearing loss!
